How to use your new WordPress site

So, you’ve just got a WordPress website, now what?

If you’re not tech-savvy, it might be a little overwhelming at first. This article will show you a few things:

How to log into your website

When you first get your website, you’ll be given a user name and password.

Go to:
www.your-site-name.com/wp-login

Enter your username and password.



How to make a page

Now, you’ll see something like this. It is called the Dashboard.

Focus on the side menu.
Find where it says, “Pages”.
Hover over it.
Click on “Add New”.

Next, you’ll be taken to a page that looks like this.

I’m going title my page, “My First Page”.
You can name yours whatever you’d like.

After you title your page click on “Publish”.

Once it’s published, next you’ll click on the “W”, in the top left corner.
This takes you back to the Dashboard.


How to add navigation

Now, let’s add that page to the navigation.

Focus on the side menu.
Click on “Appearance”.

A sub-menu will open with several items.
Click on “Menus.”
Now, you’ll see something like this.

Under “Add Menu Items” you’ll see a checkbox with the name of your page. Mine is called “My First Page”.
Check the box.
Click, “Add to Menu”.

Your page will appear in the list under “Menu Structure”.

Double check “Primary Menu” is checked.

Click, “Save Menu”.

You’ve just added your page to the website’s navigation!


How to add content

Now, focus again on the side menu.

Click on, “Pages” again.

You’ll see a list of your pages.
Click on the title of your new page to open it up again.

Now you’ll be back on your page.
Let’s add a few words to describe this page.
Click in the area circled below.


Write something like, “This is my first page. This is the first time I’ve added content to my page.”

Click on “Update”.

Now, in the lower left corner, click on “View Page”.

Congratulations – You’ve added a new page to your site!
